The mark, the colours, and how to use them. For press, partners, and anyone drawing rootmode.

The mark

A Conway glider — five cells, nothing else. It is the hacker emblem. The avatar is the glider on void. The wordmark does not go in the picture.

Colour

Three colours do the work. Violet is the only chroma. Click a card to copy the hex.

Violet is for the living thing — a button, a wash, the active state. Surfaces stay void or paper. On a dark UI the same violet lifts to light violet so it still reads. Ink is type on a light page.

Wordmark

rootmode

Always lowercase. Never RootMode, Root Mode, or Rootmode.
Wordmark: Futura / Avenir Next, extra bold, tight tracking.
UI: the system sans on desktop; Avenir Next on the site.

Profile and banner

Profile is the glider only. Banner is void until the glider, then a violet wash to the top-right.

Do, and don’t

Do

  • Use the five-cell glider, this orientation, on a 4×4 grid.
  • Keep the avatar glider-only. Type lives on the banner or next to the mark, not inside it.
  • Let violet arrive as a wash — dark until the glider, then open toward the top-right.
  • Write rootmode in lowercase.

Don’t

  • Don’t recolour the mark mint, gold, or a rainbow. Violet is the chroma.
  • Don’t outline the cells, add a drop shadow, or extrude them.
  • Don’t rotate the glider off-grid or rearrange the five cells.
  • Don’t lock the wordmark into the profile picture.
